I was small. I was little. They always said, "Rahi is too small! Rahi is too little! She can't do anything!" But they where wrong! I was going to prove that I could do anything! I was going to catch a fish. Yes my very own fish. And I was going to do it in the great Bear Rive itself! But as I reached the water with my paw to catch one of those magic fish, I slipped and fell into the deep swift water. I was tossed up an under. The icy water filled my lungs as I slowly started to drown.

The bicolour male trotted along the Bear River, admiring it's splashing silver current and occasionally his reflection in its waters. Calmess swam through his body like the fish that floated down the river, quick and easy. With a sigh, Tosco turned around and planted himself in the thick, warm grass, ready for a nice nap in the sun. He closed his eyes and let the sounds around him lull him into semi-conciousness.
Suddenly, a large splash rang out over the small babbles of the river. Tosco's eyes snapped open and he lept to his feet, searching for the source of the noise. His eyes met with a sodden wet shape that was obviously alive and his instincts kicked in. He threw himself into the freezing water, his gaze fixed on the shape determinedly. "Grab onto something!" he called to the pup. He wouldn't reach her in time if she didn't try to stop herself from drowing. She has to grab on!

I blinked in the ice cold river. I was holding on to consciousness, my only hope to survival. Suddenly I heard a voice, it sounded far away, miles away. I didn't have to listen, just close my eyes and let go of life. Maybe death was easier. I didn't know, I'd never died. Maybe death was simpler no more choices, or rejections. I'd never have to think again. But there were still wonderful things about life. The cool grass and sea breezes. I could hold on and enjoy those. Then the voice was calling again. It said something. It sounded like hold on. To what? Almost as soon as I thought that I saw a rock. So I grabbed on with my last grain of energy. And I held on with my paws and teeth for life. Literally.

A sigh of relief escaped Tosco as the pup grabbed onto a large rock that was near her. Although the game wasn't over yet, he felt a strange feeling of accomplishment. His feet paddled at the water fast. He reached out with his paws and scooped through the water, edging closer and closer to where the pup floated, clinging onto the rock for dear life. Finally he reached her and closed his yaws around her neck. With a gulp of air, he dragged her under the water and ploughed at the current as it wheeled him to the side. What a bad day for three legs. he thought. Suddenly the river bank veered up beside him and he smacked his head against it, throwing the pup onto the shore. With a gasp, he felt himself wheel off towards the rapids. Then it went black.

Rahi didn't really pay much attention to what was happening outside of her own body. She was concentrating on holding onto that rock that was slowly slipping away. One paw slowly slipped and she was clinging onto her last moments of life. That's when the mouth came over and gently picked her up. The voice! It looked like they where going to make it when suddenly he, at least she thought it was a he, hit his head. She was suddenly tossed up as he went down. It took a second or two to catch her breath, but as soon as she regained it the fist thing she yelled was NOOOOOO! HELP! SOMEONE HELP! But no one was around, she realized she had to do it herself. So she ran. She was not a bad runner. But the water was too fast, she could just barely see her rescuer. Every time she caught up he went farther. Was there any hope?

The darkness was suffocating and impossible to fight off. Tosco felt himself weaken fast as he choked on more of the Bear River's contents. His fur begun to get heavy and his body slid towards the riverbed before catching on the fast current and being propelled down the river. His will began to fade and his paws stopped trying to reach the surface. What did he care? He was dead anyway.
Suddenly, a burst of strength pulsed through his veins. With a gurgle of triumph, he pushed his way towards the surface, disorientated but still awake enough to figure out which way he was meant to swim to. His lungs burst as he reached air and he found himself gasping uncontrollably. His paws ploughed through the water and towards what he hoped was land. The bank crashed into him and he lost all the breath inside of him, but with a kick of his hindlegs he heaved himself onto the firm ground, collapsing from exhaustion. The blackness he had seen before rushed back to meet him and he was carried off into unconsciousness before he could take another breath.

I was scared! Really scared! I'd never seen death before. And I was afraid I would today. I could only watch, maybe they where all right. I was only a pup. But as I continued to watch this heart skipping struggle I was astounded. He managed to fight the current! He was going to make it. With amazing strength he pulled himself onto the bank. Then collapsed into a heap. So now it was my turn, I did all I could. I licked him clean to keep him warm and dry until I he woke up. It was all I could do.

Darkness, darkness all around him. Nowhere to run, nowhere light or warm. Just freezing, confusing darkness. And then light, blistering, burning light that could scorch the very fur off a manen. Tosco awoke to himself coughing and spluttering, relieving himself of the water in his lungs. Nearby, a worried looking pup was watching him. All the events of that day came flooding back into his mind, sneding his body into a howling arch. The song rang out slowly and sadly, with a touch of confusion mixed in. He was telling his story through his howls, letting all who would listen hear what he had to say. As his song drew to an end, he turned his gaze back to the pup. "Hello there, little one," he said. "I am Tosco, Leader of the Rasak Tribe. What's your name?"
